What is on the Moon?

Six places you can find on the Moon — most of them from a city, with nothing but your eyes. The Moon is drawn at the phase where each one is easiest to see, because that is the night to go and look for it.

The dark patches are not seas. People called them that before anyone knew better, and the names stuck: they are old lava, flatter and darker than the ground around them. And the phase is not Earth’s shadow falling on the Moon — it is simply which half the Sun is lighting, seen from here. The far side is no darker than this one. It just never turns our way.

And the real Moon does not look like this drawing. Through your eyes it is smaller than you expect and brighter than you expect, with no outlines around anything. Through binoculars, look along the line between the light and the dark. The Sun is low there, so every crater throws a long shadow and stands out.
