Spark and Perl go looking
Why are you making it smaller?
Because this one is huge and faint.
But it is the CLOSEST one!
Which is exactly why it is so big.
The same light spread over more sky is fainter.
So closer is worse?
It is as wide as the Moon and you can still walk straight past it.
Then the far ones are always faint.
This one is near.
…Faint can mean far away, or it can mean spread thin.
This one is faint because it is spread so far across the sky, even though it is near.
Two ways to be faint.
Yes.
In autumn, low in the south. It takes a really dark sky.
You can see this from anywhere in the world.
Where to find the Helix Nebula, and when
Where the Earth is clear, it climbs high in the sky. The darker it gets, the lower it stays. Where it is black, it never comes up. No shading at all: it does not matter where you live.
What do I need to see the Helix Nebula?
You need a 150 mm telescope. Your eyes and binoculars will not show this one. This picture is about 40× — which is what that telescope gives on a good night.
Only at low power. The urge to magnify is the thing to unlearn.
