What is heating it up?
Squeezing. Jupiter pulls harder on the near side than on the far one.
Io keeps the same face to Jupiter the whole time — the way our Moon keeps one face to us.
Then if it never turns away, what is doing the squeezing?
Its path is not a circle. Io swings closer and further, so the pull keeps changing.
Stretched, eased, stretched again — and that melts the inside.

What the shading meansClose
Where the Earth is clear, it climbs high in the sky. The darker it gets, the lower it stays. Where it is black, it never comes up. No shading at all: it does not matter where you live.
What do I need to see Io?
Binoculars with 10× magnification show it, if you rest them on a fence or a wall.
It stays a dot — but now you know which dot is on fire.
A 150 mm telescope is what shows it properly.
