Spark and Perl go looking
It is tiny.
And so far from everything.
It is the furthest away anything from your world has ever been.
Is it still awake?
Still whispering.
So faintly that a message takes most of a day to reach home.
What is the gold circle for?
A record.
Music, and hello in a great many languages, in case anybody ever finds it.
No — it is tiny, and further away than you can picture.
But you can point at the right part of the sky and know: that way, and further than you can think.
From nowhere on Earth.
Where the Earth is clear, it climbs high in the sky. The darker it gets, the lower it stays. Where it is black, it never comes up. No shading at all: it does not matter where you live.
