Worth knowing about the Crab Pulsar

On that same scale model, the Crab Pulsar sits right at the center of the Crab Nebula -- about 6.5 meters from the Sun. Light takes 7 thousand years to get here from the Crab Pulsar, so what you are looking at is the Crab Pulsar as it was 7 thousand years ago.

What it is made of
The neutron star left at the center of the Crab Nebula's explosion; its magnetic field sweeps a beam of radio waves and light around like a lighthouse, spinning ~30 times per second.
How we know: Radio, optical, and X-ray telescopes detect a signal flashing on and off with millisecond precision at exactly the expected rotation rate, aligned with the Crab Nebula's center.
What makes it worth knowing
Born in the same 1054 AD supernova that made the surrounding nebula. Its precise, slowing spin has let astronomers test general relativity.
