Worth knowing about Kepler's Supernova

On the 100-meter-track scale model of the Milky Way, Kepler's Supernova would be about 20 meters from the Sun. Light takes 20 thousand years to get here from Kepler's Supernova, so what you are looking at is Kepler's Supernova as it was 20 thousand years ago.

What it is made of
A Type Ia supernova, like Tycho's: an overfed white dwarf blowing itself completely apart, leaving nothing behind.
How we know: X-ray telescopes measured what the wreckage is made of -- heavy in iron, short of oxygen -- which is the pattern a detonating white dwarf leaves and a collapsing giant does not.
What makes it worth knowing
The last supernova ever seen with the naked eye inside our own galaxy -- over 400 years and counting.
